I have been a geoscience professor for over 20 years at South Mountain Community College. During that time, I have taught the following courses:
- Physical Geology
- Historical Geology
- Introduction to Planetary Science
- Life in the Universe
- Geologic Disasters and the Environment
- Sustainable Cities
- Sustainable Word
I am a continuing Solar System Ambassador and serve on the National Science Teaching Association’s Aerospace Advisory Board, the JustSpace Alliance board, and the SEDS USA advisory board. In 2019, I was the science communication outreach officer on the JOIDES Resolution expedition 383 and spent 2-months at sea investigating the dynamics of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. I also participated in the 2-week faculty development seminar Exploring Urban Sustainability in India. I was a 2017 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Teacher at Sea, a 2016 Astronomy in Chile Educator Ambassador (ACEAP), and a 2014 PolarTREC Teacher investigating climate change in Barrow, Alaska.
Example of Outreach Videos
The JOIDES Resolution (2019)
Last summer I had an epic adventure at sea as the education outreach officer on the JOEDES Resolution Expedition 383 – Summer 2019! Check it out: Dynamics of Pacific Antarctic Circumpolar Current (DYNAPACC)
NOAA Teacher At Sea (2017)
- I was selected to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Teacher At Sea program in 2017. NOAA’s Teacher at Sea Program was started in 1990 and provides teachers with hands-on, real-world research experience working at sea. For 3-weeks, I helped conduct pollock research in the Bering Sea on the fisheries vessel the Oscar Dyson and blogged about my experience for NOAA.
Astronomy in Chile Educator Ambassadors Program (ACEAP) (2016)
- I was selected as a 2016 ACEAP Ambassador. The ACEAP is a National Science Foundation (NSF) program that sends K-16 formal and informal astronomy educators to US astronomy facilities in Chile. During the summer of 2016, I joined 8 other ambassadors as they visited Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), Gemini South Observatory, and the Atacama Large Millimeter submillimeter Array (ALMA). I returned to San Pedro, Chile in 2017 to engage in STEM education outreach activities with the local high school and the surrounding community.
PolarTREC (2014)
- I was selected as 2014 PolarTREC teacher. PolarTREC is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded program that connects teachers with scientists conducting research in the arctic and Antarctic regions. I spent a month in Barrow, Alaska learning Historical Ecology for Risk Management and investigating the impact of climate change on the coastline and community.
