In this keynote presentation, we will discuss how technology is changing education and what we need to do to keep up. More importantly, I will provide practical tips on how to stay relevant and to develop a flexible, futuristic mindset for the changing educational landscape.

Me with other presenters at the General State of Italian Education

RECOMMENDATION: A.B. PH.D., EDUCATION POLICY ADVISOR, CONFINDUSTRIA (VERIFIED @CONFINDUSTRIA.IT)

Sian opened the States-General of Education, an event promoted by the main Italian association of entrepreneurs (Confindustria) to attract the attention of public opinion on the urgency of renewing the Italian educational system by taking as an example, the good models of other countries. We could not have chosen a better speaker to tell the value of the American educational system: not only because she has deep knowledge about it, but because she is a direct witness and a real protagonist. Her extraordinary life, her competence for analysis, and her great communicative skills literally inspired all the participants in the event (including the Secretary of the Italian Education). Sian actively participated in all the activities of the event and interacted very well with Italian and international panelists, demonstrating a very strong curiosity. I can say that Sian is as an education expert – but also at a personal level – a formidable speaker. Thanks to her, our event has reached a very high level of interest, even among the media.

Online Learning and Accountability

How do you know your students are really doing the work in an online environment? It is a question educators have struggled with for a long time. But now, with technology, we can finally move beyond this question. Student-generated screencast videos enable educators to visually see what their students know and how they are processing their own learning. Combining this technology with open-ended questions can unleash student creativity, increase student engagement, and encourage student-centered learning. Let’s get together and talk about how we can maximize student learning and engagement in the digital world.

RECOMMENDATION: L.Y., FACULTY DIRECTOR, CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING, SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE (VERIFIED @SCOTTSDALECC.EDU)

Dr. Sian Proctor has presented at Scottsdale Community College’s TechTalks event on three occasions. Her presentations are engaging and always well aligned to the theme of our event. Dr. Proctor has a strong stage presence and is relatable to a wide array of audiences from students, to teachers, to scientists, she is able to pique their interest, hold their attention and inspire them.

Leadership Lessons from Living in a Mars Simulation

Learning about yourself and the type of leader you want to be can come from many different experiences. Two profound experiences have shaped my leadership style and the way I interact with teams. The first experience was when I lived for 2 months in a survival reality TV show called The Colony on the Discovery Channel. The second came from living for 4-months in a NASA-funded Mars simulation. I would really like to share with you what I learned!

RECOMMENDATION: S.U., COORDINATOR, OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE AT ASU WEST CAMPUS (VERIFIED @ASU.EDU)

Sian has made such an impact on our program in such a short amount of time! My students, age 50+, immediately fell in love with her presentation style and personality and they cannot get enough of her classes. She is intelligent and motivational; she makes learning fun at any age. Aside from her excellent teaching skills, she is a pleasure to work with before and after the event. She responds quickly to all correspondence during the planning stages, always arrives early for class, and is prepared with informative and well-thought-out discussion topics. I will hire her again and again!

I presented at the Scottsdale J Community Center to a mixed group of students and senior citizens.

The Power To Connect: How to Create Opportunity

Do you want more career opportunities? Join Dr. Sian Proctor as she teaches you how to make connections, maximize opportunity, and inspire you to go from ordinary to extraordinary. She will take you on a journey through her amazing career and share the lessons she’s learned from being a finalist for the NASA Astronaut Program, living for 4 months in a Mars simulation, being on two reality TV shows, and much more.

RECOMMENDATION: J.C., DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, EDINBORO UNIVERSITY (VERIFIED @EDINBORO.EDU)

Sian Proctor spoke at Edinboro University in October 2017 to a sellout crowd of more than 125 students and faculty. Her talk, “The Power to Connect,” was interactive, motivational, engaging and thought-provoking. The students are still talking about how inspiring she was to them! Many geoscience students attended the event because Sian is a 1992 geosciences graduate of Edinboro University. She showed them that with determination, focus, getting out of your comfort zone and using your connections, you can achieve your dreams!

Analog Astronaut: Living in Moon and Mars Simulations

Ever wonder what it would be like to live on the Moon or Mars? In this interactive discussion, you will learn about analog astronauts, analog locations around the world, and the research needed for humans to successfully inhabit the Moon and Mars. I have lived in 3 analog sites. I lived for 4 months in the NASA-funded Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS). I lived for two weeks in the LunAres habitat in Pila, Poland, and 2-weeks in the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS). We will discuss the ins and outs of living in a ‘hab’ and what it would really be like to live on another planet.

RECOMMENDATION: M.M., AUTHOR OF THE ASTRONAUT INSTRUCTION MANUAL  (VERIFIED @SEDS.ORG)

Imagine the power of hearing up-front and intimate the true-life experience of someone who rose above thousands of candidates to the last cut-off for the opportunity of being an astronaut…and not make it…speak on the personal success of that experience, and the transformative power of all of life’s experiences. The takeaway from Sian Proctor’s story is as vital as it is far-reaching. As a scientist, accomplished academic, and highly-regarded science communicator, Dr. Sian Proctor’s story is less a tale of where she has been then it is a description of where she is going and why we should care. The fact is when it comes to pursuing our dreams-and discovering for ourselves the multi-faced value of the journey-we should all care. And upon hearing Sian Proctor speak, believe me when I say, you will care.
