Space2inspire Public Speaker

I am passionate about inspiring others to develop their leadership skills by harnessing their unique Space2inspire. I have 3 goals when I give a keynote. They are:

• Inspire the audience to believe in themselves and what they can achieve.
• Take action, make opportunity, and develop a can-do mind shift.
• Engage the audience. I don’t lecture or present – instead, we discuss and learn.

My leadership knowledge comes from amazing professional development experiences such as being a crew member of Inspiration4: the first ever all civilian mission to orbit. I am the first black female pilot of a spacecraft and the first black civilian astronaut. I also engage in scientific expeditions around the world such as living in a NASA funded Mars simulation for 4 months, a moon simulation for 2-weeks, and surviving a Discovery Channel apocalyptic reality tv show called The Colony for 2 months.

I have been the science demonstration expert on the Science Channel’s show Strange Evidence. I was also featured in the PBS series called Genius by Stephen Hawking. I’m in Episode 2: Are We Alone where I learn how to search for intelligent life in the universe. I have also been featured in the Cox Communication Show called the STEM Journals.

I am a NASA Solar System Ambassador, was an astronomy in Chile education ambassador, was a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 2017 Teacher at Sea, and a PolarTREC teacher to Barrow, Alaska. I was even a finalist for the 2009 NASA Astronaut Program.

I have traveled and taught around the world, I’ve done education outreach at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, and Goddard Spaceflight Center. I completed my last sabbatical at FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute developing their science of disasters curriculum.

I am a geoscience professor at South Mountain Community College (SMCC) in Phoenix, Arizona. I have a B.S. in Environmental Science, a M.S. in Geology, and a Ph.D. in Science Education. I am the faculty developer for my campus and specialize in helping others network and engage in professional development. I spend part of my time working in the Center for Teaching and Learning. I am also the campus sustainability coordinator and STEMS club advisor. My areas of expertise are leadership, networking, professional development, STEM education, sustainability, and resiliency, teaching with technology, inspiration, motivation, adventure, disaster science, and diversity.
